I’m sorry, but this is ridiculous! It’s not right to choose what color eyes your child will have, what color hair and what sex they’ll be.
I’m all for in vitro. If you are unable to have a child, and science has given a woman a way to reproduce, then so be it. I am also almost for messing with cancer or disease causing genes. But I am not for choosing what features your child will have.
In Los Angeles (go figure), a clinic will soon offer women who are already receiving in vitro fertilization treatments, a way to choose hair color, eye color and skin complexion. In this article, it talks about Fertility Institutes of Los Angeles and how, after the public was outraged with the notion of choosing what your child will look like, the director, Dr. Jeff Steinberg, decided against it.
But it’s only a matter of time before another clinic offers this.
Why do I think it’s wrong? Well, because it goes against nature. And now that I’ve been pregnant I feel I can argue against this. I played the waiting game, rather impatiently, but it was the experience of waiting that you cannot replace. Will my baby be a boy or girl (at 22 weeks we found out)? Will he/she have blue, green, hazel, brown eyes? Will his/her hair be blonde? Will he look like me? Will she look like her daddy? All of these questions are what pregnancy is all about!
I equate choosing hair and eye color to the holocaust. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but honestly, Hitler wanted to do away with dark hair and dark eyes. Yes, they were already living, but now we’re going to have a bunch of people out there choosing what they want in unborn children. Not fair. And what about those crazies that can already have children but are turned on by the idea of choosing what their kids look like and have in vitro to get what they want? So it’s their money they’re spending…but who cares! It doesn’t matter if the procedure is free – you shouldn’t get to choose what your children look like. It goes against everything in nature.
David does not agree with me. He thinks that my comparison to the holocaust is exaggerating. But I can’t help it. It’s just not right.
Note: My religious veiws do not come into play with my opinion since, to be quite honest, I do not belong to a religion.

I’m not sure about Holocaust, genocide, or even a little murder, but this is definitely messing with nature. I’m generally against messing with nature. I openly oppose any kind of plastic surgery done to either a man or a woman (excluding reconstructive) before he or she has had his or her last child. Plastic surgery affects who has children with who and alters the human population gene pool from their childrens’ generation foreword. In other words, people without brains or beauty who would normally be excluded from the breeding process naturally, are getting enhanced and producing offspring who will have a greater chance of needing to be enhanced themselves.

The Holocaust only refers to one instance of genocide, the extermination of 6 million Jews under the Third Reich. I didn’t understand this when I first commented, it seems.

I think that if nowadays the science can give her this kind of social benefits, why you don’t want to give her this advantage?

Ariana,
I guess I’m just about not messing with nature. Call me a modern day hippie, but that’s just how I feel. Science doesn’t replace nature in my book.
Thank you for your comment and your opposing view. I’m all for fruitful discussions!

i think that this is just crazy!! God says that he picks what your child will look like, not you!! it is very unethical! let your baby look the way he/she is made to look!

Lol, and who do you think it is that ALLOWED us to do this?
If God REALLY didn’t want this, it would’ve never came into the world.

i can’t believe what the world is coming too…now having a child is going to be like going on a shopping trip or buying a car. Instead of the child being happy we have to be happy with the child. oh boy.

Nina, that was a good way to look at it. I totally agree.
